WBO Organized Play Rule Updates Dec 2020: Mode Changes, Driver Chips, Launch Position - joyos - Dec. 20, 2020

Hello everyone! Recently, the Organized Play division of the WBO Staff met to review some proposed updates to the rules of several formats.

Again, while there are some larger-scale adjustments in the works for competitive play that have yet to have some of their finer details ironed out, we'll keep you updated on those when they're ready, so keep an eye out!

For now, here are all of the changes that we agreed on during the meeting, which can be enacted immediately.

Updates Overview
  • All Formats: Mode Changes Ruling Update
  • All Formats: Physical Launch Position Ruling Update
  • Burst Format: Driver Chip (Xt+, Xc'+X, Zn'+Z) Ruling Update
  • Burst Format: Dual spin parts rule clarification

All Formats: Mode Changes Ruling Update
We have added a new addition (seen below in green) to the "Parts with multiple modes" rules. This addition will apply to parts like Cho-Z Valkyrie, Tempest Ring, Hyperion Burn and Buster Xcalius, for example.

Quote:Parts with multiple modes
Unless specified otherwise under Beyblade/Part-Specific Rulings above, the following applies for all parts with multiple modes:
  • Modes may be changed at any point during the match before it begins or between rounds.
  • If the part with a mode change requires disassembly, the initial mode must be selected during the Beyblade Selection phase before presenting your Beyblade to the judge for inspection. After the first round, it may only be changed once for the entire match.
  • If two players wish to change modes at the same time, they must turn around and do so in secret before continuing the match.
  • Parts with gimmicks/mode changes that may activate or change–whether intentionally or not–post-launch must be reset after each round. These are not considered mode changes and do not count towards the single mode change per battle limit for parts with mode changes that require disassembly.

All Formats: Physical Launch Position Ruling Update

We have amended our rules of what constitutes a legal launch position slightly for all tournament formats.

The updated ruling is below in green.

Old WBO Rulebook (All Formats) Wrote:Launching

A round begins with the call of “3–2–1 Go Shoot!”

Both bladers must simultaneously launch their Beyblades as the word “shoot” is called.
  • Keep your Launcher held within your half of the BeyStadium. Never attempt to obstruct your opponent’s launch.
  • Launch your Beyblade from just above the opening in the BeyStadium’s barrier (30cm maximum from the stadium floor).
  • Do not touch the BeyStadium at any time. If you think the BeyStadium should be adjusted, ask a judge.
  • If a winder-based launcher is being used, a legal launch consists of the winder being pulled out of the launcher, rather than pushed in.

Burst Format: Driver Chips

Driver Chips (e.g. Xtend+ Chip, +X, +Z) cannot be removed from a Beyblade for the duration of a match once it has been submitted to the judge for inspection.

If a Driver Chip comes off during battle, the opponent is awarded 1 point.

Burst Format: Removing Dual Spin Layer Examples in the Burst Rulebook

The examples of dual spin parts given in the Burst Format Rulebook has been removed to reduce confusion regarding dual spin parts.  Spin direction cannot be changed after the selection phase for any dual spin part.

Sorry this took a bit more time to get out due to the Holidays. The rulebooks now should reflect these changes and the changes made in September 2020.

what if the dimension driver changes height, unlike tempest, it is an actual mode change, does it have to be reset before the next battle too?

In the case of something like Dimension dash, it does not have to be reset.  It is in fact a mode change that doesn’t require disassembly, meaning that it can “be changed at any point during the match before it begins or between rounds.”  You can simply chose to leave dimension dash at the height it ended the battle at.   That can be your mode change.

Does the launcher ruling mean that Gattyaki is official now?

The launcher ruling was not meant to address Gattyaki.

If a beyblade’s frame is knocked loose, but it’s using a driver like Octa or Wave that stops it from separating from the rest of the beyblade, does it give the opponent a point?

I think so, as it’ll still be off the core disk a bit, and that would give an advantage to those drivers. That’s what I think.

From the first page of the Burst Rulebook;

Quote:The opposing Beyblade bursts (2 Points OR 1 Point if Frame, God Chip, or Driver Chip comes off)

So yes, your opponent gets the equivilent of a 1 point Burst Finish. Even if it detaches and stays on, this should be spotted when the battle ends and awarded accordingly, as it would've happened before the other win condition.

If a judge is unsure, calling it a draw and relaunching is also an option.

Can I ask about Trans/Trans'?
After a while of playing it becomes loose and may change modes mid-battle. Does that mean I must reset it to the original form (I'm asking if mode change mid-battle is a valid mode change.)
E.g. I present Trans' in Attack mode, Swap to stamina mode, then halfway in battle it changes to attack. After the match must I change it back to stamina mode?

You wouldn't have to change it back to Stamina mode, because there's not really a point in doing so. Since Trans' mode change doesn't require disassembly, it can be changed at pretty much any time during the match, meaning that even if you did have to change it back to Stamina mode, you'd just be able to change it back to Attack mode before the next round starts.

Thank you for the changes to making these formats easier and better for everyone. It means a lot.

RE: WBO Organized Play Rule Updates Dec 2020: Mode Changes, Driver Chips, Launch Position - Shindog - Jan. 17, 2021

Please be aware that we made a minor clarification in the Burst Format Rulebook.  All the examples of dual spin parts were removed.  The dual spin rule applies to all dual spin layers as stated.
