just use inuit
it's sorta the equivalent of calling everyone that looks like they're from southern asia "pakis"

Didn't know that either. Wow...

Recently purchased at a yard sale:
Mini Fridge! Latest edition to the mancave! It's got a few sodas inside right now and it's sitting on the computer desk in easy reach of the computer.
Also today, my best friend bought us Mirror's Edge for 20 bucks in the bargain bin at K-Mart. Very win.

inuit is the overarching term for the canadian language groupings, yupik and aleut are still called eskimo by the american government tho, it's retarded and racist as hell

i went to a museum in the states and they had a section on the aboriginal peoples of north america and all the high arctic stuff that wasn't aleut was labeled as "eskimo", and it made me really goddamn mad because you could tell that the stuff they had came from a lot of different groups, lots of it from canada, and they had some really interesting objects

they also had some stuff made by white sailors from whaling ships labeled as carvings made by locals to sell to tourists

RE: Recent Purchases - Spinster - Sep. 25, 2009

Traditionally, the term Eskimo or "Esquimaux" is used to refer to any indigenous peoples of Arctic areas, as the term is derived from the Montagnais (a group of the Innu people of Canada) word meaning "snowshoe-netter". It's not exactly 100% accurate, but it's not exactly rooted in a terribly offensive term.

...then again, neither is "Porch Monkey", and that's considered pretty offensive these days, too.

elliot, i grew up in northern canada, a large portion of my friends were inuit and my parents worked their asses off to preserve the languages

my dad spent over ten years going back and forth to tiny isolated communities on the islands in the bering sea to record and transcript the elder's stories

with the way the word has been used over the past 150 years it has been become an extremely derogatory term, it's part of an extremely dark history that people are really trying to move past

i think i'd know better than someone who's never been north of the 60th parallel

Whoah girl, don't get all bent, I wasn't disagreeing with you, just giving some of the history of the term.

i was well aware of the history, and that may be the case but the emotions associated with it run very strong and deep

Noted, but not everyone on here is from the north. People should not be reprimanded simply on the basis of language used. History and reason should be given, otherwise there's no point in admonishing the offender. I feel the same way every time someone makes a hillbilly joke, but I don't go off on people because most don't know what life in the hollers is like and how hurtful the gross generalizations of hillfolk can be.

RE: Recent Purchases - AnnieDuck - Sep. 25, 2009

it's a massively personal issue for me since it's something my parents fought for so long, i'm really touchy about it

the northern peoples of canada lived in a state of glorified apartheid up until relatively recently, but they're still starving (thanks peta) and there are still massive social issues that the rest of the country is trying to ignore because bad things like that just don't happen in canada

eg: [Image: isacfg1.gif]
Average annual suicide rates (per 100,000) by NWT region, 1986-1996

in a territory with a population of 40k people that's a massive number

anyway enough ot carp
